Off the Porch, New SWBMAI Member Band, Plays Froth House Feb. 7

A trio of old-timey chanteuses head up one of SWBMAI’s newest member bands. Off the Porch is a relatively new band on the Madison traditional music scene. Featuring a blend of 3-part vocal harmonies and acoustic instrumentation, the band brings an old-time sound to their music. Song choices go from gospel to gritty and everything in between.

Off the Porch is Mary Helmke (vocals, banjo, autoharp), Jonathan Ivry (fiddle), Stephanie Ramer (vocals, guitar), Catherine Rhyner (vocals, mandolin), and Brad Wolbert (bass). The band won the 2010 SWBMAI holiday talent show. Since then Off the Porch has played many gigs, including the Frequency, the Wild Hog in the Woods Coffee House, the Harvest Moon Festival and the Fitchburg Farmers Market. They’ll be the featured band at the Froth House, 11 N Allen St. in Madison, this coming Tuesday, February 7.

New SWBMAI Member Band Opens Hydro Street Brew Pub

The Driftless Bluegrass Band will be playing for the Grand Opening of the Hydro Street Brew Pub in Columbus, WI on Saturday evening, Feb. 4., from 8:00 to 10:00 pm.  The Hydro Street Brew Pub is located at 152 W. James Street, Columbus, WI.


Henhouse Prowlers Play the Alchemy Tonight

SWBMAI member band The Henhouse Prowlers will play the Alchemy in Madison tonight, January 26, on their way to playing the Winter String Band Gathering in Minneapolis. Music starts at 9:00 p.m.

With a focus on traditional vocal harmonies, hard driving instrumentals and sincere lyrics, The Henhouse Prowlers strive to play bluegrass the way it was meant to be played. The Prowlers perform around a single microphone and wear neatly ironed suits. The effect of this setup draws a crowd into an intimate performance that is virtually unmatched in the midwest.

Daylight In The Swamp Dukes It Out for a Chance to Open for Del McCoury

SWBMAI member band Daylight in the Swamp is a contestant in the Chicago Bluegrass and Blues Festival's "Last Banjo Standing" competition. The band with the most votes gets to appear at one of the festival's two main events, either with Del McCoury and David Grisman on January 21, or the Drive-By Truckers on January 28. Ophoven Family is the Newest SWBMAI Member Band

The Ophoven Family, a gospel bluegrass sextet from Grand Rapids, MN, has become the newest SWBMAI member band. The band consists of Jerry and Molli Ophoven and their four musically talented children, Kate, John, Aaron, and Elizabeth.


Art Stevenson and High Water Replay on Wisconsin Public Radio This Evening

Wisconsin Public Radio's Route 51 regional talk radio will present an encore broadcast of its live concert with Art Stevenson and High Water, one of America's top bluegrass bands, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22.
The concert was emceed by Route 51 host Glen Moberg at the Center for Civic Engagement Theater on the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County campus. The program originally aired in August, wrapping up Route 51's summer music series.
Route 51 can be heard on the following WPR stations in Northern Wisconsin:

Daylight In The Swamp Plays the High Noon Dec. 21

One of the newest SWBMAI member bands, Daylight In The Swamp, will play at the High Noon Saloon in Madison on Wednesday, December 21, starting at 5:30 pm.
Daylight in the Swamp is a 4-piece contemporary bluegrass band based out of Madison, Wisconsin. The band members are a collection of some of the top musicians in the area. The various influences they bring to the group show the diversity of their backgrounds. Jon Vriesacker is a former Wisconsin State Fiddle Champion as well as an accomplished classical violinist who has performed with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. Dave Bacholl lends his talents on bass in many styles of music from blues to jazz to contemporary. Ryan Gallagher, in addition to having a superbly classic country/bluegrass voice, possesses flatpicking guitar styles unapproachable by many as well as rock solid rhythm techniques. Dave Goodwin has been playing banjo for over 30 years and has vast experience in stage, TV, recording, and radio work.
