Editor’s Note: SWBMAI Board Member Catherine Rhyner passed along the following audition notice from Madison’s Broom Street Theatre.
Broom Street Theatre announces auditions for musicians and actors for their upcoming production of “Minglewood Blues”.
Based on Harry Smith’s legendary bootleg, “The Anthology Of American Folk Music” – playwright Doug Reed has imagined a world where the characters from our country’s creepiest folk songs; Casey Jones, Stagger Lee, John Henry, and a courtin’ frog all inhabit the same town with murderous results.
Director Marty Mulhern, a longtime Broom Street veteran, marks his return to the theater with “Minglewood Blues”. Longtime BST fans will remember Mulhern as the author of the blockbuster “Buck Mulligan’s Revenge” in the mid 90’s. He also brings a musical background to the show as the current lead singer for The Apologists.
Musicians: What do you play? We probably need it. Guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, or that weird instrument you made from a cigar box and baling wire. Whatever you play, bring it in and play it for us. If you can work up a song from the Anthology, that’d be great. (Some suggestions include John Henry, Frog Went A-Courtin’, The Coo Coo Bird, Frankie & Albert.) If you don’t know anything off the Anthology, prepare the oldest folk, country, or blues tune you know.
Musician auditions are May 31 & June 1, 5 – 7 p.m., at Broom Street Theater; 1119 Williamson Street.
Actors: Auditions will be held on the following dates. 6/22, 6/23, 6/29, 6/30. All auditions will be at 7pm at Broom Street Theater. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script and you should come prepared to move. Singing ability is not required. Actors who play an instrument are requested to come to the musician auditions as well.
The production runs Aug 7 – September 13. For more information, please contact Marty Mulhern at 242-9808.
